ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

I wish you could see what I see out the window  - the earth pink and yellow cliffs to the north - the full pale moon about to go down in an early morning lavender sky behind a very long beautiful tree covered mesa to the west - pink and purple hills in front and the scrubby fine dull green cedars - and a feeling of much space - It is a very beautiful world - I wish you could see it."  — Georgia O'Keeffe in a letter to painter Arthur Dove, September 1942.

To many people Georgia O'Keeffe and New Mexico are synonymous. The colors, shapes and textures of the desert world stimulated O'Keeffe's unique artistic vision. She in turn captured the elemental force of the region in which she chose to live. The resulting works became icons of twentieth-century art — dramatic and sensuous images that immortalized both the artist and the landscape.

This five-day workshop will draw on O'Keeffe's distinctive techniques of composition as a means of understanding the complexity of the New Mexican landscape. While visiting many of the locales where Georgia O'Keeffe painted in New Mexico and those that inspired her, you will learn new ways to organize scenes and forms within the camera's frame. You will explore this land with award-winning photographer Craig Varjabedian, who will share his own insights about approaches to developing your photographic eye and honing your skills as a photographer. He completed a seven-year photographic project on Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe painted many of her iconic images, and published his work there in Ghost Ranch and the Faraway Nearby. There will be visits to O'Keeffe's home in Abiquiu and to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. The workshop will include digital feedback session to receive constructive comments about your work.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Whether you are pointing your camera at magnificent mesas or capturing the dynamic weather that is common here, you'll spend time challenging yourself and improving your image-making abilities. During the workshop, we will be out photographing in both morning and evening light. During mid-day hours we will be looking at images on your laptop computer to provide feedback and further your progress.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This workshop is terrific for all digital photographers who have a good understanding of their camera and are able to edit and manipulate images on their laptop computer. You should be prepared to carry your own gear and be capable of walking and light hiking on sand, rocks and somewhat varied terrain.

WHAT TO BRING
Lots of enthusiasm for making pictures. Your digital camera with lenses, a tripod and filters. A laptop computer with image-editing and manipulation software that you know how to use. (We will provide a complete list of necessary gear before the workshop begins.)
